An elderly woman was struck and killed by a train at 7:35 a.m. today at the Charleston Road crossing in Palo Alto, Caltrain said.
An eyewitness, a student who was on her way to middle school, said the person was an older woman.
As a result of the incident, Caltrain had major delays during the morning commute. Train delays ranged from 20 minutes to two hours, as trains operated on one track through the area during the investigation, according to Caltrain spokeswoman Christine Dunn.
Passengers of southbound train 210 were uninjured, Dunn said. Bus service was being offered between the California Avenue and San Antonio Caltrain stations.
This is the tenth fatality on the Caltrain right of way this year, Ms. Dunn said. Last year there were 12.
