The social media company announced on Monday (Aug. 19) that it will donate laptops to the eighth-graders at Belle Haven and Willow Oaks elementary schools in Menlo Park, and the Cesar Chavez Academy in East Palo Alto.
"We want to get young people interested and help them excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematical skills," said Tim Campos Facebook's Chief Information Officer. "Our goal with the laptop giveaway program is to provide students with the equipment they'll need to learn more about technology and prepare them for high school, college and beyond."
Ravenswood City School District Superintendent Gloria Hernandez thanked Facebook for its help in bridging the digital divide between students with access to technology and those without. "In order to generate systemic improvement in our community, it is important that our schools partner with the Silicon Valley companies right in our back yard to help prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century economy," she said in a press release.
