As of Dec. 23, John Maltbie, the interim county manager for San Mateo County government since November 2011, will take over as the permanent manager, with an immediate 11 percent raise over what the position previously paid.
In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, Dec. 11, the county Board of Supervisors agreed to a four-year contract with Mr. Maltbie with an annual salary of $300,000, according to a copy of the contract.
His benefits include a monthly vehicle allowance of $1,000, nine weeks of vacation, and severance pay of a year's salary or whatever is left to his contract if he leaves with less than 12 months remaining in his contract.
While Mr. Maltbie can accrue and be paid for up to 720 hours of unused vacation, "it is the intention of the County Manager and Board of Supervisors that the County Manager fully utilize his annual vacation accrual," the contract says.
The county manager oversees a staff of 5,104 with 403 positions vacant, according to an internal status report from November 2012. More than half work in two departments: public health with 1,976 employees, and public safety with 1,266.
