Opening alert: Drunken Lobster in Mountain View

Downtown Mountain View will get a new seafood restaurant on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with the opening of Drunken Lobster at 212 Castro St.

Drunken Lobster is the brainchild of Brian Langevin, a longtime Bay Area chef who for the last several years has "been going around opening restaurants for other people," he said in an interview Friday. He opened BUILD Pizzeria and Artichoke Basille's Pizza in Berkeley as well as Pizza Rock in Sacramento.

But when he recently got the opportunity to open his own restaurant in Mountain View, he jumped at it.

"Downtown Mountain View is just booming right now," he said.

Drunken Lobster will serve all-things seafood, from fresh Maine lobsters flown in live every day to local rock cod fish and chips, West Coast oysters and mussels and chorizo served in a white wine sauce with fresh bread from Berkeley's Acme Bread Company. Everything will be made from scratch and will be locally sourced as much as possible, Langevin said. A basic lobster roll will go for $20; get the "ultimate" with hollandaise sauce, shredded lettuce, tomato, fresh shaved black truffles, cole slaw and housemade fries for $30. There's also clam chowder, salads, lobster mac and cheese plus a burger, hot dog, grilled cheese and basic mac and cheese for non-fish lovers.

It's a "real simple menu, but everything is really good quality," he added.

Drunken Lobster will serve beer and wine only, with six beers on tap and about 15 in bottles that will be rotated. Langevin is starting with only two or three Napa Valley wines by the glass, but will expand if he sees a demand for it.

The space itself, formerly the home of Pita Bite and Gyros House, has been redone to look like an "East Coast lobster shack" with reclaimed wood and other rustic touches, said Langevin, who did all the construction himself.

Drunken Lobster will soft open on Tuesday, Sept. 22, around 3 p.m. Normal hours will be 11 a.m. until 9:30 p.m., with the likelihood of staying open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

Good luck dude. $20 - $30 for a sandwich? That would be on the high end for even a New England tourist destination where the Lobster Roll is a core part of the experience. Not sure you're going to see the traffic or the demographic to make this work, but I wish you well...

Well, duh, the lobsters have to be flown in! Of course they will be pricey!

I grew up on Long Island, so I welcome this type of restaurant to this area, and hope for it's success. I'll be eating there, and good luck to you. I think it'll be a different experience for Californians!

It might interest Meesha ("a different experience for Californians") to know, first, that we Californians (with more coastline than all the New-England states combined) have our beloved local seafood too, sought out by connoisseurs from other states. Also, that specialties like lobster rolls have long been popular in the Bay Area, at well-established restaurants like the peninsula's Old Port Lobster Shack (Redwood City and elsewhere), to which the new place will inevitably be compared. (It is already being compared to its nearby oyster-specialty competitor Shell Shock.)

I tried Drunken Lobster once already, found good fresh local shellfish in some variety. Imported lobster is among the offerings, but there are many others. Chef tells me our famous local crabs will feature, in season.

I've easily spent much more on Maine lobster. Because this one is in a sandwich it's supposed to be 8 bucks? Nah, it's lobster first, a sandwich second.

This place looks promising, lower/competitive pricing on non lobster items like burgers and calamari. I can't wait to see what they do with our dungie crabs when they come in.

I guess the east coasters are having the same reaction we would if we saw how much they are charging for CA artichokes on the east coast.
Yes, when things are imported, they are more expensive.

Great little seafood lobster shack type restaurant. Although a little pricey, definitely worth it for the quality of food. Lobster rolls are delicious as well as the chowders and fish and chips. Nice addition to Mountain View. Castro Street!

I just visited yesterday - food was amazing and definitely worth the price. What I didn't like paying for was the sour-faced woman who worked there. I plan to return and once again decide to not place anything in the tip jar.
